Emma Field was born 2 May 1813 in England. Emma married John Farrar on 10 Mar 1839 in England. In 1848 the family came to America, living in Lawrence, Essex, MA for over 20 years. John had been employed in the woolen factories in England; he secured employment at the mills in Lawrence.
Emma and John’s three sons were born in Bradford, Yorkshire, England; Squire in 1840, Samuel in 1844, and John Field Farrar in 1847. Daughter Elizabeth Emma Farrar was born in Lawrence, MA; she was known as Lizzie. In 1863 the family moved to Salem, Marion, OR and John Farrar became a pioneer in the grocery business. Squire had come west earlier and was already established.
Their sons were very also involved in business in Salem. Squire Farrar was involved in the woolen mills in Salem and Brownsville, he was also a grocery man, a hops man, a postmaster and a senator. Son John Field Farrar was a grocery man. Samuel was a fireman in Salem. Daughter Lizzie never married, and one newspaper article mentioned she had been an invalid for 40 years.
Granddaughter Agnes Farrar was mentioned in an article from 1890 as working the drawer-in at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. The same article mentions her grandmother Emma working the burling table and J. F. Farrar as a weaver. Grandson Joseph Watt Farrar was listed as living with his grandmother and working as a spinner at TKWM in an 1893 City Directory.
Emma and John lived on Water St near their grocery store. Later their family home was at 221 Court St. John eventually sold his business to his sons John F and Squire who operated Farrar Bros. About 1879 Squire bought out his brother’s interest.
Emma died at her home at 221 Court St on 20 Jul 1900. She is buried in the family plot in Pioneer Cemetery in Salem, OR. |
