Story |
Mary McIntyre was born to Peter and Mary (Grieves) McIntyre on 29 July 1869, in Lacon, Illinois. Her parents were originally from Scotland and came to America in the mid 1800’s. Her father, Peter, was a wool mill worker in Illinois and continued that work after moving to Oregon. She had two brothers, James D. McIntyre and John W. McIntyre who also came to Oregon when the family moved in the late 1800’s.
By the 1880 census the family was living in north Brownsville, Oregon. Mary’s father Peter is a wool sorter at the Brownsville Woolen Mill. Her mother is housekeeping, Mary is a student and her little brothers are there as well.
By 1890 the family had moved to Salem, Oregon. Miss Mary McIntyre, her father Peter and her brother James were all working at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. Mary was a weaver; her brother James was an assistant to his father Peter who was in charge of the wool sorters.
The 1893 Salem City Directory lists Peter, James and Miss Mary living at 254 Chemeketa. Miss Mary is a weaver, Peter and James continue be wool sorters. Mary’s brother John is not with the family and there is little found on him from then on.
In 1900 the family has moved to Oregon City, living on Adams St and Peter and James are working at the woolen mill there as a wool sorter.
On the 15 of March 1905 there was a tragic accident at the Oregon City Woolen Mill and Mary’s father Peter was crushed to death in an elevator accident while loading wool. He is buried at the Mountain View Cemetery in Oregon City.
After this Mary and her mother moved back to Illinois to live with her brother James who had returned to Illinois and was a tailor there. Mary’s brother James died in 1912 and her mother died there in 1915. They are buried at the Springdale Cemetery in Peoria, IL. Sometime after their deaths Mary returned to Oregon.
By the 1920 census Mary was living in Corvallis, Oregon. Miss Mary McIntyre was house mother for the girls at Sigma Kappa Sorority for many years. When she retired, she moved back to her home in Oregon City.
She died on 22 Apr 1953, in Multnomah, Oregon, at the age of 83, and was buried in Oregon City, Oregon. |
