Story            Ed Sawyer worked for TKWM as a weaver and spinner from 1898-1900.

James Edward Sawyer was born on 12 August 1868 in New Market, Tennessee. His mother Sarah J. Sawyer claims to be married in the 1870 and 1880 census, but neither survey shows her husbandThere is evidence that, in fact, Edward’s father left the family and was employed in Washington DC.

James Edward or “Ed” married his wife Mabel 1 June 1898 in Salem, OR and the couple lived in Salem thru 1900 while Ed worked at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. Ed had started his work for Thomas Kay at the mill in Brownsville. After the turn of the century, Ed left the mill and returned to Brownsville to go into the lumber business with his brother Samuel.  He did not stay long in the lumber business, though it thrived for many years. He worked as a teamster, grocery store driver, and then eventually returned to mill work in Brownsville.

Ed and Mabel had two children, Harry and James. By the time they were in their early 20s both were working at the Brownsville Woolen Mill. Although Ed and Mabel lived in Brownsville for almost 40 years, at the time of Ed’s death they were in Camas, WAEd died on 26 Dec 1950 and Mabel in 1955. Both are buried in the Washougal Memorial Cemetery in Washougal, WA.
