Carl August Lehman worked at TKWM from about 1910 as a dresser then supervisor until retirement in 1939. Carl’s father August and siblings also worked at the Mill for some time.
Carl’s German emigrant parents, August (1866-1936) and Anna (1867-1964) Lehman arrived in the U.S. in 1891 and settled in Oregon. Carl was born on 24 Apr 1894 and by 1900 the family was living at 1740 Oxford St. in the Yew Park neighborhood of Salem, OR.
In 1910, Carl worked as a weaver at TKWM along with his father August. August left in 1911 to become a restaurateur. By 1917, he worked alongside his siblings Ella and William as weavers. On 26 Apr 1919 in Vancouver, Washington, at age 25, Carl married Lew J Bell who was 19 at the time. They had one child named Doreatha but divorced by 1929. In 1935 Carl married Glenna B Jayes, a divorcee with two teenage children. She was a weaver at TKWM.
Carl continued working at TKWM as a Dresser Foreman until ill health forced him to move to southern California in 1939. Wife Glenna accompanied him. Carl died from a heart attack in Hollywood, CA on 26 Mar 1940 and was returned to Salem for burial in Belcrest Memorial Park, Salem. |
