Life Story
|
Flora Allport worked for TKWM from 1906-1907 and again from 1920-1924 as a weaver, later finisher.
Florence “Flora” Aurelia Allport was born 5 Dec 1891 in Galt, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada to Thomas and Aurelia [LaQue] Allport. She was one of eight children born to the couple. The family immigrated to the U.S. in 1898. Father Thomas had been recruited by Thomas Kay to run the carding department at his mill in Salem, OR.
She married Omar Conklin Conger on 20 Aug 1907 in Salem. She was 17 years old, and a weaver at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. Her groom was 24, a Spanish-American War veteran and a goldminer in Southern Oregon. They made their home in Jacksonville following the wedding. They were parents of two sons: Thomas and John. Thomas died as an infant in 1910. Before his birth in 1909, the couple returned to Salem and lived with Omar’s parents John and Annice Conger.
From 1909-1915 Omar took a series of different jobs, alternating between Salem and Portland. Their second son John was born in 1915, in Portland. Two years later, the couple divorced. Flora was given custody of son John. She returned to Salem then, to her father’s household, and to the TKWM weaving department. Then in 1927 she trained in cosmetology and took work at The Model, and then the Capital Beauty Shoppe. In 1930 she opened her own place, the Oregon Beauty Shop, with Garnette Clearwater. About this time, she also met David Scott, the foreman of Oregon Pulp & Paper. They were married on 5 July 1932. She sold the beauty shop in 1937 and the couple moved to Middletown, Ohio where David took work with the Sorg Paper Co. His roots were in the Midwest and his family in Kentucky.
Flora died suddenly 16 Oct 1939 in Middletown, Ohio, from a heart attack. She was 46 years old. She was buried in Maggard Cemetery in Partridge, Kentucky, her husband’s boyhood hometown. Husband David remarried, then passed away in 1956. |
