Emil Donaldson worked as a dyer at the TKWM from 1903-1924 along with other family members.
Emil P. Donaldson was born 24 April 1879 in Sweden to Carl J (John) and Caroline [Peterson] Donaldson. He was one of six children born to the couple. The family immigrated to the U.S. in 1887 and moved to Dallas, Oregon by 1888. After father John passed away in 1892, the Donaldson brothers needed to work to provide an income for the family. Emil took work as a day laborer until the family moved to Salem at the turn of the century. In 1903 Emil started work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill alongside brother George in the Dye House.
Emil married Mabel Zoe Yantis on 2 Nov 1910 at the home of the bride’s parents on south 18th St. in Salem. In 1924 the couple moved to Portland where Emil took a position as the supervisor of the Dye Room at the St. Johns Woolen Mill. Zoe died 9 June 1944 of cirrhosis of the liver, at age 61. She was buried in Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem.
On 19 Mar 1948 Emil married widow Martha G. Kittredge in Salem. Emil retired in the early 1950s. He died 19 Sep 1953 from heart failure, at Emanuel Hospital in Portland. He was 74 years. Interment took place at Belcrest Memorial Park. His second wife Martha died 20 Feb 1954 in Portland and was also buried in Belcrest Memorial Park. |
