Life Story Ed Antrican worked as a weaver at TKWM from 1932 to 1940.

Edward D. Antrican was born 28 June 1910 in Salem, OR to William and Dolly [Trent] Antrican. He was one of four children born to the couple and the baby of the family. The family moved from Tennessee in 1903. They lived on a farm in Eola, Polk County near Williams and Thacker hop ranch, father William’s place of employment. Ed attended Eola School thru 8th grade along with his siblings, then left to find work.

At age 16, Ed had a narrow escape from drowning in Rickreall Creek near his home. It was the end of January 1927, he and a neighbor boy Curt Ferguson were inspecting the high water in creek when the bank of soil gave way. Ed dropped ten feet into the water of a very swift current, the creek swollen to an approximate depth of 20 feet. Once he fell in, he was weighed down by his heavy winter clothing and boots. His friend Curt spotted an old willow tree growing out of the bank near the edge of the water downstream. He climbed out onto the frail branches in water up to his waist and managed to grab Ed’s coat collar. It took half an hour to extricate themselves from the tree and climb back up the steep, slippery bank to safety. After a change of clothes and warm drinks, Ed was none the worse for his experience, reported the Capital Journal newspaper on 29 Jan 1927.

After he left school in the 8th grade, Ed found work on the hop ranch his father worked for, as hop sampler and also took work on the highway construction taking place thru Salem and into Polk County. What would later be called Salem-Dallas Hwy (OR 22).

On 7 Oct 1930 Ed married Esther A. Olson in Vancouver, WA. The couple came back to Eola to live near Ed’s parents. They would be the parents of one son, Donald Edward Jr. born in 1932. The same year, a friend of Ed’s offered him work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. The job opening was in the spinning department. He kept track of the yarn as it came off the spinning mule and moved thru the different departments until use. He then transitioned to the weaving department and worked as a loom fixer. He worked at the mill until 1941.

After he left the mill, he worked construction on Camp Adair which was being built in rural Polk County off Hwy 99W. Then he went to war.

When Ed filled out his draft registration card for World War 2 his physical description was listed as a height of 5 ft. 11 ½ in. and his weight as 162 lbs. He had a light brown complexion with black hair, and brown eyes.

Following the war era, Ed returned to the Eola area and worked as a cattle buyer. Then in 1950, the family moved to the Pringle area of South Salem. Ed continued to purchase and raise cattle for sale. Then in 1962 he switched occupations and took work at Salem Sand & Gravel Co. as a laborer and truck driver. During this period, wife Esther worked as a cook for the Fairview Hospital. They worked these jobs until their retirement in the late 1970s. Then moved to Windsor Island Rd. In the Keizer area.

Ed died 7 July 1985 in Marion County, OR and was buried in Restlawn Cemetery in West Salem. Esther died 12 Mar 1993.
