Story |
Dora Bailey worked as a weaver at TKWM from 1900-1905.
Dora (Sanders) Bailey was born on 18 Sep 1866 in Minnesota to Michael and Silvia Sanders. She was 24 when she married Thurman Bailey in Sibley, MN on 13 Sep 1890. The couple had one son, Benjamin H Bailey, who was born in New Auburn, Minnesota on 1 Mar 1892.
Soon after Benjamin’s birth, the family moved to Salem, OR, where Thurman’s younger brother Charles resided. Thurman seemed to be in ill health from the start. He passed away in Salem on 30 Apr 1895 and Dora found herself a widow with 3-year-old Benjamin to raise alone.
Dora may have relied on her bother-in-law Charles and his wife for support during her first few years as a widow but, by 1900, she was working for TKWM as a weaver while she and Benjamin boarded with the VanPatton family on Mill St. She worked at TKWM until she married a widower, house carpenter Hugh P Fuller in April 1905.
By 1910, Dora and Hugh were living in West Butte, Washington County, OR. Benjamin, now 18, was working as a chauffeur. Although there is no available record of a divorce, Dora’s second marriage did not last. By 1912, Hugh lived alone in Portland and eventually began working for the Salvation Army. He died in 1918. Benjamin married and became a deputy sheriff. Dora lived with Benjamin and his wife until at least 1917.
By 1920, Dora was back in Salem working as a live-in personal nurse to Nancy J VanPatten, age 80, and Ellen T. McLean, age 82. She and Benjamin boarded in the VanPatten home 20 years prior. By 1930, Dora was still employed as a live-in nurse but with the Simon Dinctor family at 744 Cottage St.
At age 64, Dora was most likely taken to Portland in ill health to be closer to Benjamin. She passed away after a cerebral hemorrhage at the Multnomah County Hospital on 14 Sep 1931. Her death certificate recorded burial at Crescent Cemetery in Metzger, Oregon though at the time of research, no record of her was located in that location. |
