Story |
Edson Bassett worked at TKWM as a washer and then a finisher from around 1921 to 1945. Son Paul and brother Fred also worked for the mill.
Edson Everett Basset was born on 7 Nov 1873 in Bedford, Iowa to George A. and Emma J. Basset. He had two older brothers and a younger brother and sister. Youngest brother Fred was born in 1887.
Edson married Cora D. Gower on 21 Dec 1898 in Green County, Iowa. The couple had two sons, Paul and Glenn, before Cora died in 1910 at age 35. Soon after, Edson apparently moved to Illinois to be closer to family and for help while raising his sons.
In 1917, Edson married Ida Eleanor Yates in Dunlap, Illinois and soon the couple followed some of his family and in-laws to Oregon. Edson and Ida farmed in the Central Howell area until 1920 when they bought a home at 355 Richmond Ave. in Salem.
Edson did not find work right away but by 1924, he and son Paul, then aged 23 and married, found work as laborers at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. Paul soon left TKWM to begin work in retail seafood sales and commercial painting. Edson then worked in the finishing department where he stayed for the rest of his years at TKWM.
Brother Fred also followed the family to Oregon where he married his wife, Bessie. Fred bounced around several jobs, usually as a truck driver. For a short time in 1934, Fred joined Edson as a finisher at TKWM. He died in a logging truck accident in 1944.
Edson’s wife Ida died in 1945 at age 70 and within a few years, Edson left TKWM after 25 years of service. He and son Glen, who never married, took up residence at 1874 Cherry Ave. By 1950, Edson worked as a part-time janitor at the State Fairgrounds.
Edson passed away on 23 Oct 1959 and is buried at Belcrest Memorial Park, Salem, OR. |
