Life Story

Beatrice Burton worked at TKWM briefly in 1925. Her mother was Janet LeRoy Burton who also worked at the mill.

Beatrice Bettina Burton was born 27 July 1900, in North Dakota to parents Perry H. and Janet [LeRoy] Burton. She was one of five children. The family moved to Salem, Oregon by 1910, where her father worked as a carpenter. Beatrice attended public school in Salem and graduated from Salem High School in 1919. After graduation, she completed teacher training at Oregon State Normal College.

Beatrice’s parents divorced in 1919. Her father Perry and brother Hackley had moved to John Day, Oregon, for work. Her mother Janet took a job in the finishing department at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill to support her children, and Beatrice briefly joined her at the mill in the early 1920s. In 1926, Perry went to Honolulu, Hawaii to supervise building construction for the U.S. government. He returned after five years and died in April 1931 in Los Angeles, California. His body was brought back to Salem and buried in Belcrest Memorial Park.

By 1930, Beatrice was living in Bellingham, Washington, where she taught school at 29 years old. She was a lodger in the home of an elderly couple, Clarence and Minnie Nichols. Beatrice dedicated herself to teaching until her retirement in 1965. She never married and spent her summers traveling the world with fellow teacher friends.

On 20 Apr 1979, Beatrice passed away in Bellingham, at the age of 78. She was cremated and her ashes were interred with her family members in the Burton plot in Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem, Oregon.
