The small bulb you can see hanging above the intersection may at first look like some kind of traffic signal.  In fact, the light served as a sort of “Bat Signal” that called the Salem Police Force to action in days gone by.  Whenever the police were needed, the red light was lit, signalling that the officers should report to headquarters for instruction.
