The Heritage Programs of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department recognized students and staff from Willamette University and Western Oregon University last week with Heritage Stewardship Recognition certificates.  The awards commended their assistance in saving historical materials at the Willamette Heritage Center and the Independence Heritage Museum that were threatened by flooding this past January.  You can read about the awards here.

While water threatened the Jason Lee House, Parsonage, John Boon House and the first floor of the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill, Willamette students and community volunteers assisted in moving materials to upper stories or hoisting the heavier items several feet off the floor.  Everything was clear of danger within a few short hours and WHC staff started turning volunteers away!

KPTV featured the story last week.  You can read the story or view the video here – (Source video no longer available).
