Story |
Adolf Stainke worked for TKWM from about 1930 through 1935.
Adolph Schtankeo was born on 12 Dec 1882 in Gusefof, Poland. He married his wife Matilda in about 1900. When they immigrated to Canada, they claimed to be German nationals born in Russia. When they left Winnipeg to immigrate to the US, they had two children, Othelia and William.
The family emigrated to the United States in April 1919 and moved to Broadmead, OR northwest of Salem. By 1920, the family had moved into Salem proper while Adolph worked at a cannery. At this point the decision was made to simplify the family name to Stainke. However, many references also used Steinke.
Adolf was well-versed in many trades. Over the years he was a carpenter, sheet metal worker, cannery worker and service station owner. He sometimes had multiple sources of income with these skills. In 1930 through 1934, he was a machine operator at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill, but he was also the proprietor of the Lucky Corner Service Station at 205 Columbia in Salem by the end of that period. In 1930, the family lived at 1365 Mill St., then moved to 1696 Mission St. by 1934.
Then, by 1940, the family had moved to Dallas, OR where they owned and operated a service station. He may have still worked at least part time at TKWM. In 1942, Adolf finally took the final steps to gain US citizenship.
For the next 20 years, Adolf made a living using his varied skills. Adolf was living in West Salem when he passed away 27 Feb 1961. Matilda passed in 1964. They are both buried at City View Cemetery, Salem, OR. |
