Story |       Amos Hunn Barker worked for TKWM from about 1920 through at least 1940. He started as a common laborer and ended his time at the mill as the Finishing Room Forman.
Amos was born on 23 August 1874 in Iowa to Merrill and Louisa Barker in 1874. He had a half-brother, Frank by his father’s first marriage. By 1880 at age 5, Amos had moved with his family to Nebraska. After Amos, Merrill and Louisa had six more children, the last being born in 1893. Amos performed military service from Nov 1894 – Dec 1897. About that same time, the family moved to Mahama OR and by 1900 Amos was a farm laborer in Howel Prairie while boarding with the Danial Smith Family. In 1903, at age 28, Amos married Bertha (Betsey) M Hull Barker and in 1906, they had a son, Gordon. Amos and Bertha may have moved to Portland when Amos’ father passed away in 1904. We do know that by 1910, he had left the farm to spend some time as a street car conductor in Portland. He was back farming near Salem by 1915. At that time, the family lived on Silverton Road just outside the Salem city limits. From Jan 1918 through April 1919, Amos served in the Oregon Militia (National Guard). It is unclear whether this service included WW 1 overseas duty. Amos began working at TKWM in about 1920 as a laborer after moving his family to 1811 Lee St. He worked his way up to Finishing Room Forman by 1940 having moved to 1715 Lee St. He and Bertha lived there until Amos’ passing on 28 Sep 1950 at age 76. The house still stands as of early 2019. |
