Life Story

Anna Schmidt worked at TKWM in the late 1930s to early 1940s as a sorter in the Picker House. Her son Detrich [Dick] also worked at the mill.

Anna Nachtigal Schmidt was born 30 July 1869 in Heinrichsdorf, Volhynia Province, Russia [now Ukraine] to Peter and Aganetha “Nitta” Nachtigal. She immigrated to the U.S. with her parents in 1874, arriving in New York City, and they settled in Bon Homme, Dakota Territory.

By 1880, Anna’s mother remarried John Boise, a fellow Russian immigrant. Anna attended school and, on 9 July 1886, married Cornelius J. Schmidt in Niobrara, Knox County, Nebraska, at age 17. They had eight children: Susan, Helena, Peter, Henry, Alexander, John, Paul, and Detrich. The family lived in Barnum County, South Dakota, then moved to Portland, Oregon, and later to Clark County, Washington, and Washington County, Oregon. By 1904, they resided in Fergus County, Montana, where Cornelius Detrick was born.

The 1900 census recorded the family residence in Salt Lake [Salt Creek] in Polk County, Oregon, with seven children. Cornelius was a farmer. They later moved to Dawson, Montana. By the 1910 census, Anna was 48 years old with eight children who still lived at home, ranging in age from 4 to 22. In 1912, Cornelius and Anna were granted U.S. citizenship in Dawson County.

By 1920, the family was still in Dawson, Montana. Cornelius passed away on 9 February 1925 in Dallas, Oregon. In 1930, Anna, now a widow, lived in Salem, Oregon, with her son Detrick. The 1940 census recorded Anna, aged 73, living with her granddaughter Vivian in Salem where she worked as a sorter in the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill.

Anna died 26 February 1943 in Salem, Oregon, due to circulatory failure and esophageal cancer. She was buried beside her husband at Salt Creek Cemetery outside Dallas, OR.
