Von Hindenberg Laughs At British Army

Field Marshal von Hindenberg, Germany’s military genius, direction operations in the east, has no fear for his country from Lord Kitchener’s new British army.

“Kitchener has a million solders, but no real army,” the field marshal told correspondents of neutral nations. “He has just a uniformed crowd. The officers and non-commissioned officers lack the experience of the Germans who have generations of military training behind them.”

Commenting on a rise in religious fervor the Oregon Statesman editor writes:

It is strange, at first thought, that the flower of spirituality should grow in the blighted soil of war. Many of us, when this conflict started, regarded it as evidence of “the breakdown of Christianity” and the “decay of religion.” But in spite of the violence and brutality there has been a new quickening of the things of the spirit. The suffering of war time, the sacrifice, the pain and struggle, the uncertainty, the constant risk of life and grapple with fate, all these profoundly stir the religious instinct. To be sure, if religion were made really effective in the practical life of men and nations there would be no war; but given a state of warfare, religion actually seems to flourish with new vigor.
