Bill Earl worked for TKWM as a spinner from 1918-1920. Other Earl family members also worked for the mill.
William George Earl was born 26 July 1900 in Letcher, South Dakota. He was the youngest son of Edward G. and Frances [Quinn] Earl. The family came to Salem in 1903. Father Edward was a farmer, who took work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill along with Bill’s older sisters Marie and Esther. Brother John also worked at the mill. He attended school in Salem until 8th grade.
On 30 Aug 1919 he married Hazel Miller in Salem, OR. At the time of their marriage William worked as a truck driver and Hazel was a clerk. The couple would have one son, named Donald. From 1920-1933 he operated a barber shop on Commercial St. Later he worked as a salesman with Valley Motors.
From his WW2 draft registration card we get a sense of his physical characteristics. His height was 5’ 10 ½” and weight 191 lbs. He had a dark complexion, with gray hair and blue eyes. The registration card is dated 16 Feb 1942.
Wife Hazel died of heart failure in Salem Memorial Hospital on 1 Feb 1968, she was 69 years old. She was buried in City View Cemetery in Salem, OR. Bill remarried on 27 Jun 1972 at age 71. His second wife was Venita Gertrude Talbot, age 58, a restaurant manager.
Bill died at his home 5750 Trail Ave. NE in Salem on 3 Dec 1977. He was buried at City View Cemetery.
