Life Story

Bud Meeske worked at TKWM for over 20 years in various positions such as weaver, hander-in, and extractor.

Edwin Meeske was born in South Dakota in 1908 to German immigrants Lewis and Anna [Uppendahl] Meeske. He had one sibling, a sister named Norella. By the 1920 census, the Meeske family had relocated to Salem, Oregon, where they rented a home on South Commercial Street. Edwin, then 12 years old, lived with his family while his father worked in a lumber mill.

In 1930, at the age of 22, Edwin resided with his sister’s family at 1375 Mission Street in Salem and was employed at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. By 1940, Edwin, now 32 and still single, continued to work at the woolen mill but lived with his parents and niece, Phyllis Deacon, at 1365 South 14th Street. His World War II draft registration described him as 5’4″ tall, weighing 168 lbs., with a light complexion, hazel eyes, and brown hair.

During World War II, Edwin served with the U.S. Army in France. While away, both his parents died, as well as his sister Norella from cancer. After the war he returned to Salem and his job at the woolen mill.

By the 1950 census, Edwin, now 41, worked as an extractor at the woolen mill and lived alone at 2180 Lee Street in Salem. On May 4, 1952, he married Ruby Fay Steward, the sister of fellow TKWM millworker Floyd Steward. The couple had no children.

Edwin Meeske passed away at the age of 57 following a heart attack on September 11, 1964. At the time of his death, he was employed as a custodian at the State Finance Company and was a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church. He was buried in Belcrest Memorial Park. After Edwin’s death, his wife Ruby remarried Granvel Sheets. She passed away on June 10, 1995, and was buried next to Edwin in Belcrest Memorial Park.
