Campfire girls with their leader, ready for the annual Candy Sale, April 12, 1956. McEwan Photo Studios Collection, Willamette Heritage Center, 2006.002.1237.004
The annual candy sale for Camp Fire girls took place in the month of April. In 1956, at the time this photo was taken, there were 750 registered girls in Salem who would have been out selling their chocolate mints. A percentage of the candy sales supported the staff, facilities and equipment at Camp Kilowan near Falls City, OR. The girls also received a small profit per box for their own group to use for program needs, outdoor equipment, and camping trips. Capital Journal newspaper, 4 Apr 1956, p. 18.
