Charles Hinz worked at TKWM from 1923 through 1938 with a short break around 1930.
Charles William Hinz was born in New York on 18 Sep 1882 to German born parents Robert and Augusta (Schlesner) Hinz. In 1908, he married his wife Bertha in Ann Arbor, MI. By 1910, the couple was renting a farm in Willow Lake, MN and had three children who were born there. In 1913, Charles was working at a logging company in Marion County, OR. and the couple added a son Herbert.
By 1920, the family had moved on to Whitteron, ND where Charles worked for the railroad. However, railroad work apparently didn’t suit him and by 1924, the family had moved back to Oregon where Charles began his career with TKWM as a laborer. They lived at 1410 C St in Salem. The draw back to Salem may have been Charles older brother William who worked for TKWM from about 1920 through 1947.
In 1930, Charles moved the family to Portland but maintained his woolen skills working as a finisher in a mill there. By 1932, he was back at TKWM living with his family at 545 Statesman. Son Herbert lived with them working as a laborer.
Charles ended his time at TKWM as a finisher in 1938. He and Bertha moved to Portland to manage an apartment. Charles died in Portland on 18 Oct 1942 at age 60. He was brought back to Salem and is buried at Belcrest Memorial Park. Bertha passed on 14 Sep 1966 in Multnomah County. She lies near Charles at Belcrest. |
