Life Story

Clara Allport Manning worked as a weaver for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill from 1928 thru the early 1940s. She worked alongside her father Thomas and other family members.

Clara Allport was born 24 Nov 1876 in Galt, Canada to Thomas and Aurelia [LeQue] Allport. She was one of five children born to the couple. Her father was a textile millworker. She received an 8th grade education before taking work in a woolen mill. On 15 Sep 1891 in Waterloo, Canada she married her first husband Frank Gerrard. They were the parents of one daughter, Barbara Dinah.

In 1910, the U.S. census records her location in Providence, Rhode Island and a second marriage, to Albert Manning, a loom fixer in a cotton mill. It is unclear how the first marriage ended and the location of her first husband. Their daughter is found in the same census year, listed in the household of her grandmother, Clara’s mother-in-law. Clara and her second husband Albert were married in 1902 and had no children. By the 1920 census, they are no longer living together. Albert is still in Providence, rooming with another mill family and by the time of this writing, Clara has not been located in the 1920 census records.

We pick up her trail again in 1924, in the city directories for Salem, OR. She is listed as a widow, working as a weaver for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. Given her family history in the woolen industry, and her parent’s emigration to the United States in 1898, specifically to come to work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill, we suspect that Clara came to join them after her marriage ended. Clara worked as a weaver until her retirement. She died 21 July 1954 in Salem, OR from hear trouble. She was cremated and placed in Mount Crest Abbey Mausoleum.
