Clara Koppe was born 4 Oct 1883 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Emil A. and Augusta [Harzer] Koppe. She was the eldest of eight children in the Koppe family. 

In 1900, at the age of 16, Clara worked as a weaver at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. She lived in her father’s household in Prospect, Marion County.  

By 1910, Clara had moved with her family to Eugene, Oregon, where she continued her work as a weaver at the Eugene Woolen Mill at the age of 26. 

On 5 Nov 1916, Clara married Edward P. Caldwell, a 36-year-old carpenter from Eugene. She was 33 and still worked in the woolen mills. The wedding ceremony took place in the home of Clara’s parents in Eugene. After their marriage, the couple moved to Portland, Oregon. 

By 1920, Clara and Edward lived in Portland, where Edward worked as a contractor in the house building industry. Clara was 36 years old and kept house. 

Tragically, Clara’s life was cut short at the age of 38. She passed away at the Thayer Maternity Home in Portland on 23 Aug 1921, due to bronchopneumonia, which was listed as a complication of pregnancy and childbirth. Her child did not survive. Clara was buried in Eugene Pioneer Cemetery. 

Edward Caldwell remarried, Beatrice Little, and continued his life. He passed away in 1956 at the age of 76 and was buried alongside Clara in Eugene.
