Life Story

Clint Cook worked as a weaver at TKWM from 1935-1959.

Clinton Cook was born 11 Nov 1906 in Seligman, Missouri to Marion J. and Sarah J. Cook. He was one of twelve children born into a large farming family.

By 1920, the Cook family had moved to Walnut, Arkansas. Thirteen-year-old Clinton lived on the family farm, where his father, now 63, still worked the land. Clinton completed his education up to the eighth grade, the highest level he achieved.

On May 21, 1927, Clint married Lena Morrison of Glade, Arkansas. He was 22 years old, and Lena was 19. By 1930, Clinton lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and worked as a laborer in a crude oil refinery while taking care of his 66-year-old mother.

In 1935, Clint moved to Salem, Oregon, where he found employment at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in the weaving department. He started work on April 28, 1935.

By 1940, Clint still worked as a weaver and lived with fellow millworkers, the Robert Seamster family at 2048 Center St. He was divorced and earned an income of $912 in 1940, having worked 36 weeks out of the past year according to census data.

In 1942, on his WWII draft registration card Clint was described as 5’8” tall, weighed 150 pounds, with brown hair, blue eyes, and a light complexion. He was 33 years old at the time. Clint enlisted in the U.S. Army on 10 Jun 1943 in Portland, OR and was discharged from Camp Abbott on 31 Dec 1943 for a medical issue.

By 1950, Clint lived in an apartment at 180 S. 13th St. in Salem close to the woolen mill where he worked 40 hours a week. He left the mill in 1959 after it closed. He remained in Salem until 1963 according to city directories.
