Clyde Phernetton worked as a spinner at TKWM from 1910 until the mid 1940s with breaks for military service and a brief stint at the Eureka Woolen Mill. Siblings Dorothy, Pearl, Josie and Edward also worked for the Mill at different points of their lives.
Clyde Thomas Phernetton was born 19 Aug 1892 in Hot Springs, South Dakota to Edward and Emma [George] Phernetton. He was one of five children born to the couple. The family moved to Price in Linn County Oregon in 1899. In May 1902, Father Edward deserted the family. It is unclear at this point whether the family had moved to Salem prior to his desertion or immediately after. The Phernetton family with sister Pearl as head of household appear in the 1905 Marion County Census without Father Edward. At this point, Pearl, Dorothy, and Clyde had taken work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill to support their family. The family lived at 1413 Bellevue St.
In Aug 1910 Clyde enlisted in the Navy and served until he received an honorable discharge to come home and help support his mother and “her minor children”. He returned to his job as a spinner at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in Salem. During World War I he returned to military service and worked as a water tender in Puget Sound, WA. He was discharged 23 Aug 1919 and returned to Salem and work at TKWM.
In 1923 he did a brief stint working at the woolen mill in Eureka, CA but had returned back to TKWM by 1924. On 30 Oct 1926 he married Rosella A. [Case] Johnson in Vancouver, WA. They were both from Salem. They were divorced in 1949. No children were born to the union.
Clyde was employed by the Kay Woolen Mill until his death in 1951 from an aortic aneurysm. Clyde died in Salem Hospital 8 Nov 1951. He was buried in City View Cemetery in Salem, OR near family members. |
