Life Story |
Daniel Perry Wright was born on 15 Oct 1897 in Illinois. He was often called by his middle name, Perry. He was the second oldest son of William and Lydia (Green) Wright. The family moved from Illinois to Indiana and then to Oregon in 1878. Daniel had nine siblings. The ten children were Anna, Samuel M, Daniel Perry, Thomas, Harvey Landis, William Dean, Gracie, Alfred Stanton, Charles Clinton, and Virgil Finis Wright.
Daniel Perry’s father William and his brother Samuel worked for TKWM when it first opened in 1890. William’s wife Lydia and their son Daniel Perry may have been there as well. He lists along with Samuel in the 1891 city directory as a laborer, but it does not name the workplace.
The 1895 census lists Perry as a laborer, his brother Samuel and his mother are working for TKWM as dyers. By May of 1895 Perry was sent to work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in Waterloo, Linn County, OR. It appears he stayed working there for a couple of years.
The year 1897 was a very difficult year for the family as Lydia was committed to the insane by her husband William, better known as Uncle Billy. The two oldest sons, Samuel and Perry fought this, and their mother was released in February to live with her son Perry at his home in Albany. Perry had a good job at the woolen mill in Albany. Perry married Lena Meyer on 6 Oct 1897. His mother Lydia returned to her home in Salem, on the corner of 13th and Ferry. She passed away at her home on 16 Nov 1897. Her husband was in Butte, MT.
A newspaper article said Perry accepted a position in the Tacoma Woolen Mills in December of 1897. If he and Lena moved there, they didn’t stay long. They were back in Albany, OR the following year. Their only child was born there, a daughter, Lenaperl, born 23 Oct 1898.
By 1900 the family was living in Dallas, OR. Perry was a spinner at the woolen mill. Living with them were Lena’s brother, Fred Meyer and sister, Marguerite Meyer. They were also working at the woolen mill. Fred was a spinner and Maggie was a weaver.
By 1907 the family was living at 1259 Ferry St in Salem. Perry was working as a finisher for the TKWM. By 1909 the family had moved to their home at 297 S 17th St in Salem. This would remain their home for many years.
In March of 1912 Perry Wright, long employed at the Thomas Kay woolen mills, opened a business in Turner, OR called the Wright Trading Co. He filled a warehouse with farm machinery, lumber and building materials in anticipation of the spring and summer trade.
In 1915 worked as a clerk for the Great Northern Exp Co. Lena was a cook at the insane asylum. Perry later would work as a truck driver for an oil company, a serviceman for Marion Auto Co, a mechanics helper at Douglas McKay Chevrolet, and an errand boy at an auto parts store.
In June of 1922 Perry and Lena’s daughter Lenaperl married Ernest Clare Stephenson and moved to Burley, Idaho. They would bless Daniel Perry and Lena with their one and only grandson in 1923.
On 22 Nov 1943, Lena passed away at the hospital in Salem. After her passing, Daniel Perry moved to Burley, ID and lived with his daughter and her family for about three and a half years. He died at the Cottage hospital in Twin Falls, ID on 24 Jan 1947, after a two-week illness. His services were held at the Burley Elks temple and his body was shipped to Salem, OR for burial.
Daniel Perry Wright and his wife Lena (Meyer) Wright are buried beside each other at the Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem, OR. |
