The Austrian forces in the Carpathians were referred to . . . as “too small to clear Hungary of the enemy at once, but they must attack and repulse one column after another.”

A still more stinging rebuke is contained in the comment that “the Austrians report 10,000 Russians captured, but fail today within what period, making the report meaningless.”

Such declarations as these are indicative of Germany’s disgust at the futility of Austrian operations.
