Edward was born in Ireland on 18 July 1865. He immigrated to the United States in February 1882. He became a citizen on 19 Apr 1892 in the Davison County Court of South Dakota. He married Frances E. Quinn in 1889. The couple would have six children, all born in South Dakota.

Edward moved his family to Salem, Oregon in 1903. The local newspaper reported their arrival, “Edward Earl and family, recently of Sanborn County, SD have taken up temporary quarters in East Salem to remain until a suitable location can be found, when they will settle permanently.” The home they rented was at 695 S 20^th St.

Edward found work in the Dye House at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. His sons and two of his daughters would later follow in seeking employment at the mill. A further clue to the work he did may be his occupation listed in the 1910 census, stationary engineer, the definition of which is someone who operates and maintains energy producing equipment such as boilers, turbines, and motors. When research was done, no mill records were found to corroborate this.

By the 1920 census, at age 55 Edward had returned to farming. The family moved to a small property at 640 S 18^th St. Wife Francis and daughter Marie were the only remaining members of his household. Edward’s wife Frances died 4 Jun 1922 from pulmonary tuberculosis, with diabetes listed as a secondary cause. She was buried in City View Cemetery in Salem. By 1930, Edward had moved to Benicia, CA to live with his daughter Mary and son-in-law Joseph Machado. He found work as a salesman for a grocery store until his death on 29 Sep 1931. His remains were returned to Salem for burial beside his wife Francis in City View Cemetery.
