Story  Ellis Britton worked for TKWM as a watchman from 1941-1963 and may have been one of the last mill employees remaining when it ceased operation.

Ellis Doat Britton was born on 19 August 1901, in LaCross, Indiana, to John A. and Edith M Heinbaugh Britton. He was the fourth of their ten children. Raised in a farming family, Ellis left school after completing the sixth grade and worked as a farm laborer through his twenties. The Britton family moved between Indiana and Kansas, settling in Crooked Creek, Kansas.

Around 1931, the family relocated to Springfield, Colorado, where Ellis married 25-year-old Elsie Jackson Goodall, a divorcee, at age 30. By 1934, they had moved to Euphoria, Kansas, a small town situated near the railroad line, where their two children, Betty and Bobby, were born.

Ellis and his family arrived in Salem, Oregon, by 1940. He was employed as a carpenter’s helper and lived with his father John, who identified as a widower. However, the census showed that Ellis’s mother, Edith, along with her two youngest children, Everett and Emeline, still resided in Springfield, Colorado. She also claimed to be a widow.

In 1941, Ellis began working for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill as a night watchman, a position he held until 1962, making him one of the final employees at the mill when it ceased operations. Ellis registered for the World War II draft in 1942, but was not called to serve due to age. Tragedy struck the family on 22 December 1943, when their son, Bobby Gene, passed away at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland from cerebral degeneration at just nine years old.

Ellis and Elsie divorced in February 1947 but remarried in Salem two months later. Their reconciliation was short-lived; they divorced again in May 1948, with 15-year-old Betty remaining with Elsie. It is believed that Elsie and Betty may have returned to Kansas.

Ellis stayed in Salem, continuing his career at TKWM. He remarried Lucille M. McMahon Slagle between 1951 and 5 September 1954, when their son, Thomas Wade, was born. Lucille had a son from a previous marriage, Arthur Slagle, who also worked at TKWM. By 1960, Ellis transitioned to working as a fireman (boiler operator) as the mill began scaling back operations. After TKWM closed in 1962, Ellis joined Mountain Fir Lumber Co. in Independence, Oregon, where he worked until his death on 6 February 1967. He was buried at City View Cemetery in Salem, Oregon. Lucille lived until 2008 and her remains are in the City View Mausoleum.
