Margory Crooks worked for TKWM as a weaver from 1926 until its closing. Her mother Edith Keeney also worked in the weaving department.
Elmira Margory Stopf (or Stone) was born 21 Feb 1899 in Dayton, OR to William H. and Edith [Matheny] Stopf. She was a descendant of two prominent Marion County pioneer families on her mother’s side, Samuel and Almira Judson Matheny. Her mother had five husbands over the course of her lifetime which meant a series of stepfathers and geographical moves for Margory and her siblings. Mother Edith divorced Margory’s father (her second husband) by 1906. After moves to Yamhill County, Portland, Oregon City, and Eugene, the family settled in Salem by the 1920 census. It was at this time that both Margory and her mother Edith [Keeney] began work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill as a weavers.
Margory married her first husband Adolph Ralph Edwards on 24 Apr 1920 in Vancouver, WA. They were later divorced. She married her second husband Elbert Oliver Crooks on 13 June 1925 in Vancouver, WA. The couple adopted a child in 1930 and named her Margory. They divorced 17 May 1943. According to a combination of payroll records, city directories and census information we can verify that Margory worked off and on for the TKWM from 1926 thru 1965. At this point she retired and moved to California to be closer to her adopted daughter.
Margory died 20 Sep 1991 in Downey, Los Angeles, CA. At the time of this research project, her burial place and obituary could not be located. |
