Story |
Emil Koppe worked as a laborer, weaver, and loom foreman from 1891 to about 1898.
Emil E Koppe was born on 16 Feb 1860 In Saxony, Germany and immigrated to the US in 1878 at age 19. He established himself in Philadelphia, PA working as a woolen weaver. On 26 May 1883, he married Augusta Harzer and in 1887, they moved to Brownsville, OR where Emil continued to progress in the woolen trade.
In 1890, The Koppes and their six children moved to Salem where Emil began working as the first acting superintendent of TKWM. When this plant was destroyed by fire in November 1895, Koppe worked as a superintendent at the Kay-owned Waterloo woolen mill located on the banks of the South Santiam River. Two years later Emil returned to Salem where he opened a men’s clothing store. In addition to the retail department a hand knitting machine for socks and a hand loom for shawls were in operation. (Lane County Historian, Vol. 8, No. 1)
Emil brought his children into the woolen business in their mid-teens. In 1905, children Clara, Hattie, Louise, and Paul continued to work at TKWM after Emil left. The younger four children moved to Eugene with the family in 1906, after Emil accepted an offer from Thomas B. Kay to invest in and supervise a newly reincorporated woolen mill in Eugene. Emil signed on as the secretary and superintendent of the Eugene Woolen Mill and remained active in its management until the end of his life. He also served as a Eugene city councilman from 1908-1916.
Emil passed away on 13 Jul 1940 at age 80. Wife Augusta passed on 13 Jun 1958. Both were buried at Rest-Haven Memorial Park, Eugene, OR |
