Life Story

Emmett R. Boon worked as a carder at TKWM from 1893 –1895. Sister Daisy also worked at the mill.

Emmett R. Boon was born 4 May 1872, in Oregon, to Henry D. and Duenna [Jones] Boon. His lineage was distinguished, as he was the grandson of John D. Boon, Oregon’s last territorial and first state treasurer. Emmett’s father, Henry, was the proprietor of Salem’s first book and music store, which later became a significant local landmark under the ownership of the Patton Brothers.

Tragedy struck Emmett’s family early. His father suffered a fatal stroke in January 1888, followed by the loss of his sisters – Cora in 1891 from a tragic accident, Daisy in 1893 of tuberculosis – and his mother in 1892 of inflammation of the stomach and bowels. By 1893, Emmett and his siblings Shella and Claude were the only survivors of their immediate family.

On 1 Aug 1893, Emmett married Lillian Sprague in Portland, Oregon. At the time, Emmett worked as a carder at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in Salem, Oregon. At this time, the Marion County census captured some unique details regarding Emmett’s physical traits, recording a height of 5 ft. 2 in. and a weight of 143 pounds. His wife Lillian was of a similar height, though considerably lighter.

By 1900, the couple resided in Portland, where Emmett was employed as a planer in a sawmill and son Rupert was born 2 Mar 1901. Around the time of the move, Emmett and remaining family members altered their surname to “Boone,” reflecting their connection to ancestor Daniel Boone, famed frontiersman. In 1903, Emmett found work at the Clay Co. where he would remain for over a decade. He started as a yardman, yard foreman and eventually shipping clerk.

Lillian Boone died of septicemia on 17 July 1905 in Portland. She was 31 years old. The couple’s son was taken in by Emmett’s sister Shella while Emmett remained in Portland and continued to work.

Emmett remarried on 20 Jan 1912 to Alice G. Scott and adopted her son Charles Andrew from her first marriage. Rupert, Emmett’s son from his first marriage returned to the family and the two boys were raised together. Emmett and Alice relocated to Seattle in 1920 where they owned and operated a rooming house.

By 1930, Emmett and Alice had moved to Los Angeles County, California where they purchased a poultry ranch. Son Charles moved to California with them. They operated the ranch through the 1940s.

Emmett R. Boone died 27 May 1943 in Los Angeles County, California. He was interred at Grand View Memorial Park in Glendale, California. Alice outlived him by three decades, passing awa in 1973.
