Story |
Evelyn Bourson worked for TKWM from about 1946 to 1951 as a specker.
Evelyn Marie Redpath was born in North Dakota on 16 Mar 2011, to George and Minnie Redpath. She was to become the oldest of three Redpath children. By 1920, the family had relocated to Minnesota, where George worked as a farmer. In 1925, the family moved to a house on Lee St. in Salem, Oregon, where George began working in a paper mill and Minnie joined the workforce as a cherry pitter at a canning plant.
At the age of 18, Evelyn met 29-year-old Elwood A. Towner in the spring of 1928. However, their marriage ended in divorce on 27 Feb 1930. Although their divorce records stated that there were no children, Evelyn’s son Robert G. was born on 23 Oct 1930, just eight months later.
Evelyn returned to her parents’ home on Lee St. and soon after married Lyle A. Bourson on 15 Nov 1930, only a few weeks after Robert’s birth. Their marriage record notes Evelyn’s residence as 483 72nd Ave. SE in Portland, Oregon, though this information could not be confirmed by other records. By 1935, Evelyn, Lyle, and Robert had settled in Salem, where Lyle began a lengthy career at Oregon Pulp and Paper. The family lived with Evelyn’s parents at 1910 Lee St. until 1941, when Evelyn gave birth to their daughter, Judith Ann.
In 1946, Evelyn and her family moved to 2355 Adams St. where she started working as a specker for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. She remained employed at the mill until at least 1951, while her son Robert enlisted in the Air Force and daughter Judith was still a child. Evelyn later left the workforce to focus on raising her daughter.
After Lyle’s passing in 1982, Evelyn experienced the loss of both her children by 2005. She sold her home at 2355 Adams St. NE. Evelyn died on 16 Mar 2011, in Salem, just after celebrating her 101st birthday. Despite living a long and eventful life, her obituary was brief: “No services will be held.” Evelyn was buried at City View Cemetery in Salem. |
