The Marion County Historical Society received a donation of materials documenting the lives of the Fast family of Salem in 2005.  Our volunteer has cataloged the materials which include a wealth of information about members of the family and Salem in general.  In all over 1600 names are mentioned in the materials (see list at end of this article).   Of particular interest were the photo and autograph albums which appear to document Leona Fast’s time at the Oregon State Tuberculosis Hospital (1936-1938).  We have digitized the album.  You can see the images of the pages here.

Fast Family Information

By Sandy Bond

Parents of Lloyd Allen Fast

John H. Fast was born March 22, 1884 in Kansas and died November 1, 1956 in Salem, Marion, Oregon.    He died at his Salem home having had a heart ailment the last four years.  He married Anna A. Bartel  on January 4, 1912in Eakley, Caddo County, Oklahoma, at one of their parents homes.  She was born December 12, 1889 in Marion, Hillsboro County, Kansas and died July 22, 1975 in Dallas, Polk County, Oregon, at a nursing home.  According to Anna’s birth certificate she was the first born of twins.

Soon after their marriage, the couple moved from Caddo County, Oklahoma to Blaine County, Montana.  In 1920 they moved to Salem, Marion County, Oregon where they lived until their deaths.

Both John and son Lloyd Fast kept all of their mortgage paperwork:

1912 – John sold his brother Isaac property in Caddo County, Oklahoma.
1916 – John purchased 60 acres in Hydro, Blaine County, Montana, various property transactions between 1916 and 1918 in Montana.
1926 – John has cancelled mortgage for 134 S. Liberty Street, Salem, Marion County, Oregon.
1930 – 1936 – John Purchased property from T.B. and Cora M. Kay – later appears to have sold off parcels of this property, identified as “Kay Addition” parcels.
1937 – John, July 23, purchased 604 N. 17th St., Salem, Marion County, Oregon.  Property tax records kept from 1937 – 1954.
1953 – Lloyd, “a single man”, purchased property at 3125 E. Frederick, Salem, Marion County, Oregon.
1957 – three years after John’s death, Anna turned over the N. 17th St. property to Lloyd.  She continued to live there with Lloyd.
1965 – Lloyd and mother Anna purchase property at 1938 Evergreen Avenue N.E. in Salem.  Notes indicate that Lloyd sold it about 1990.  Salem City Directory shows Lloyd still living there in 1993.  Anna lived here until she moved into a nursing home in Dallas, Polk County, Oregon where she lived until her death in 1974.
1994 – Lloyd was living at 3604 Pioneer Dr SE, Salem, Marion County, Oregon (Salem City Directory).  By his death in 2004 he was living in a nursing home in Dallas, Polk County, Oregon.

John Fast worked in the kitchen at Hotel Marion in Salem for over 30 years.  He retired from this employment, likely about 1946-1949 (John was 62 in 1946).  In 1930 and 1940 he was a dishwasher there.

Anna was a cannery worker.  She was a member of the Cannery Warehousemen Food Processors Local Union 670 from 1946 to 1952 based on her union card.  Anna spent 15 days in Salem General Hospital in May of 1952 over two stays and then in December of 1953 she spent 9 days.  The invoices from the hospital give no indication of her ailment.

Between 1934 and 1944, John and Anna had the challenge of helping their three children cope with tuberculosis and their stays in the Oregon State Tuberculosis Hospital treatment.  Records of Anna and the children record treatments, health status including:  height and weight, notes about conversations with doctors,  and visitors at the hospital.  The family kept an album of pictures during that time that document patients, visitors, staff, and buildings.

The family belonged to the Kingwood Bible Church at 1125 Elm Street N.W., Salem, Oregon.  All are buried at Lee Mission Cemetery in Salem, Oregon.

John Fast’s brother, Isaac, married Anna’s sister, Amanda Bartel.  Isaac and Amanda also moved to Salem where Isaac operated Isaac and Sons Grocery on Portland Road.

John and Anna Fast and their children are found in the following U. S. Census records:

Leona Fast

Leona attended Grand Elementary for the first year and a half of school.  When the family moved to 17th St. she attended Englewood.  She attended Parrish Middle School and Salem High School.

She was hospitalized in the Oregon State Tuberculosis Hospital, between 1936  and 1938, at about age 18.  She was sometimes allowed to visit her sister Martha who was also hospitalized there.   She was quarantined on August 8, 1936 for Scarlet Fever.

While she was at the hospital she passed the time collecting poetry, strange human interest stories and autographs of family, friends, hospital staff and other patients.  In her autograph books she makes notations of when people were admitted and released from the hospital, who died and who married.  She pasted in pictures of some of her patient friends.  Leona participated in occupational rehabilitation at the hospital.  At age 23, about the time Leona was released from the hospital, she was 5’ 3” tall and weighed 130 pounds.

In 1946 she was employed at the Railway Express Agency in Salem.  She died at age 35 due to complications of the tuberculosis and may have had a heart condition.    Her last scrapbook included get-well cards collected from November 1948 up until her death in May of 1949.

Lloyd Allen Fast

Lloyd attended Englewood Grade School.  His six grade report card has a note from the teacher encouraging him to “do much reading at home.”  He attended junior high at Parrish Middle School.

Lloyd graduated with the Salem High School class of 1941, a class with a record size of 518 Seniors.  One of his classmates was Thomas Kay, grandson of the founder of Thomas Kay Woolen Mills.   Lloyd majored in business classes, taking bookkeeping, corporate accounting, cost accounting, commercial law and salesmanship class in which he achieved good grades.

Lloyd was hospitalized in the Oregon State Tuberculosis Hospital in 1938, overlapping his sister Leona’s stay there.   He also appears to have been hospitalized there again on March 4, 1944.

After graduating, Lloyd attended Merritt Davis School of Business.  He graduated from his accounting courses July 12, 1946.

Lloyd had had a Vocational Rehabilitation Service Membership Card from Oregon Physicians Service dated May 1, 1947.  It appears he  received vocational rehabilitation as part of their tuberculosis treatment.

Lloyd’s drivers license in 1952 shows him to be 5’ 11 ½” tall and weighing 170 pounds.  He had brown hair and blue eyes.

Salem City Directory records show that by 1974 he worked for the Oregon State Department of Revenue.  He had a business card for his position at the State of Oregon Tax Commission, Accounting Division,  Withholding Tax Section.

Lloyds’ funeral was held at Kingwood Bible Church based on a funeral notice in the Statesman Journal on June 1, 2004, the day of the funeral.  The Oregon Death Index lists no surviving spouse.  There is a picture of Lloyd in 1956 wearing an Oregon Centennial tie and posing with two children.  There is no notation on the picture to indicate whether the children belonged to him or someone else.

Salem City Directory shows Lloyd living at 1938 Evergreen Street N.E. in Salem, Oregon in 1974 and 1993. His mother was also living there in 1974.

Martha Fast

She attended Englewood grade school. Based on information on her death certificate, she was diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1934.  She was hospitalized in the Oregon State Tuberculosis Hospital in June of 1936.  In a letter to her mother in July of 1936 she is begging for her mother to bring her more peanut butter, she is nearly out.  She mentions the peanut butter multiple times in the letter.

In October of 1936, Leona wrote of her sister:  “Martha told Mother Sunday she knew she was saved now and she wasn’t afraid if she would die.”  Anna Fast’s notes on Martha’s progress show that the doctors had indicated in June that her lungs were almost gone and the tuberculosis was in her stomach and intestines.
