StoryĀ  Ferdig Hall worked for TKWM from 1914 to 1962.Ā

Ferdig Hall was born on 22 Sep 1895 to Moses and Rosie Hall in Cache, AR. He lived there with his family until at least 1910. Moses had been a bridge tender but by 1910, he was apparently unemployed. Ferdigā€™s older brothers Charles (24) and Otto (21) were employed and most likely supporting the family.Ā

By 1914, the family had removed to Salem and Ferdig started working at TKWM as a filling carrier, then a carder while his sister Dena worked as a spooler. Ferdigā€™s family may have come to Oregon because they had a relative in Salem, Thomas W Hall. Thomas worked at TKWM for many years and may have helped Ferdig and Dena get their jobs.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā

Ferdigā€™s father Moses (Lyman) died in Portland shortly after the family first arrived in Oregon. Ferdig lived with his mother Rose and sister Dena at 426 S 16th in 1915. By 1917, Mother Rose formally claimed to be a widow. In the summer of that year, Ferdig registered for the WW1 draft. He was single and otherwise eligible for enlistment. However, he claimed a deferment as his mother was fully dependent on him and that his eyesight was bad.Ā Ā

On 27 Apr 1918, at age 23, Ferdig married Tillie Marie Zwicker (20) in Clark County, WA. Tillie was born in Oregon, but her parents were both born in Germany. Tillieā€™s older sisters Hulda and Augusta worked for TKWM as early as 1910. Tillie came from a huge family of 13 brothers and sisters including her twin sister Lillie. The twins were weavers at TKWM in 1917. This is most likely where Ferdig and Tillie met.Ā

By 1920, Ferdig was no longer supporting his mother Rose as she was living with her daughter, Ethel D (Hall) Fraser and her husband Robert A Fraser. Ferdig and Tillie couple did not yet have children and were living 478 S 16th.Ā

By 1928, Ferdig and Tillie had a two-year-old daughter Shirley and owned a home at 465 S 15th. This is where the Hallā€™s lived for the remainder of their days. In 1932, the Tillie gave birth to a son, Wayne who later had a career as an examiner for SAIF. Ferdig was loom fixer at the time and eventually became the spinning room shift supervisor. He worked 10 hours per day, six days per week until the mill was unionized in about 1945. Ferdig retired from TKWM when the mill closed in 1962 having worked there for 47 years.Ā

Ferdig had no pension from his work at TKWM so, after leaving the Mill, he worked at a cannery for another six or seven years. Tillie passed away in 1976 and Ferdig passed in 1989. Both are interred at Restlawn in West Salem. Daughter Shirley Jean Hall Warren died on 8 Sep 2012 at age 84 and rests at Willamette Memorial Park in Albany.Ā Ā Ā Ā
