Fern Harper worked at TKWM as a spooler, then dresser from 1924-1927.
Fern G. Harper was born 30 June 1902 in Scotts Mills, Oregon, to Charles A. and Clara E. [Hubbell] Harper. She had two siblings, Chester and Hazel. Her family lived in Scotts Mills, then Pratum, until the death of her father Charles in 1915. Fern attended Capital Business College in 1921, then took a job at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in 1924. She worked for the woolen mill until her marriage.
Fern married Albert L. Moores on 16 July 1927 in the parsonage of the First Christian church in Silverton. Following the wedding the couple made their home in Eastern Oregon where Mr. Moores was employed as a truck driver. Both bride and groom were 25 years old.
The couple had two children, son Merrill born in 1928 and a daughter Evelyn born the following year. By 1930, the family lived in Arlington, Oregon with their children. Then in 1935, they returned to Silverton for a couple of years. The 1940 census saw a move to Nehalem in Tillamook County where Albert continued to work as a truck driver. Children Merrill and Evelyn were age 12 and 11, respectively.
Fern passed away on 6 April 1947 in Salem General Hospital of a pulmonary embolism, shortly after her mother’s death from colon cancer on 4 April. A joint funeral was held, and Fern was buried in Silverton Cemetery. Her husband Albert lived until 1988 and was interred in the Nehalem American Legion Cemetery. |
