Life Story

Frank E. McGee worked at TKWM from 1903-1915 in various departments and was eventually promoted to assistant superintendent. He was the son of Patrick F. McGee, the first superintendent of TKWM following original owner Thomas Kay’s death.

Francis Edward McGee was born 1 Apr 1883 in Jacksonville, Illinois to Patrick Francis and Honorah McGee. He moved to Oregon with his family at a young age. They first settled in Oregon City, where he attended grammar school. They then moved to Salem, where he completed high school and business college. Frank also attended Albany College and Mt. Angel College in Benedict, Oregon.

After college he began working at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in Salem, under his father, Patrick F. McGee, who was the superintendent. Frank quickly advanced and was promoted to assistant superintendent.

He left the woolen mill in 1916 and moved to Long Beach, California, where he became the superintendent and manager of the Golden State Woolen Mills. His World War 1 draft registration card noted that he lived with his father and described him as of medium height and build, with black/gray hair and brown eyes.

He remained in Long Beach until February 1920, when the opportunity presented itself to join a group of men incorporating the Eureka Woolen Mills. When operations were launched, he served as vice-president and general manager.

In Feb 1929, Frank married Thelma Loofbourrow of Eureka, California. Thelma was employed as a clerk at the Eureka Mill that Frank managed. He was 45 years old and his bride 24. The couple lived at 1625 Albee St. In Eureka. The couple would have no children.

Frank died 24 Nov 1931, at age 48, after an illness of nine months. Interment took place in the mausoleum at Sunset Memorial Park. Following his death, wife Thelma remarried and moved to Fallon, Nevada. She died 22 Mar 1997 at age 92 and was buried in Churchill County Cemetery in Fallon.
