Life Story
|
George Hastings Jr. Worked for TKWM as a carder from 1915-1950, with two breaks in employment for military service. His father and Allport grandparents also worked at the mill.
George Wesley Hastings Jr. was born 16 Nov 1895 in Chattam, Ontario, Canada to George W. and Ida [Allport] Hastings. He was one of 13 children born to the couple. The family immigrated to the U.S. in 1913 and came to join his mother’s family, the Allports at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. He and his father took work in the carding department run by Thomas Allport.
His physical description was documented on his employee ID card. He was a small build with a height of 5 feet, 4 inches and a weight of 130 pounds. He had a medium complexion, with brown hair and brown eyes. He served in World War I from 22 July 1918 to 24 Feb 1919 primarily at Camp Lewis, WA. While serving at Camp Lewis he filed his naturalization paperwork and swore his oath of allegiance 9 Dec 1918.
Following his return from war he married Salem girl Katherine Virginia Chamley on 12 Apr 1919 in the Congregational Church in Salem, OR. George was employed at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in the carding department and Katie was a housekeeper. They would be the parents of two children: George William “Billy” and Elizabeth “Betsy.
In 1930 George and family lived in Eureka, California while George worked briefly as a spinner in the Eureka Woolen Mill. This was common for skilled millworkers to travel to other textile mills for brief periods, to help and train a local workforce. The Eureka Woolen Mill was an interest of Thomas Kay’s daughter Fannie and her husband Charles Bishop. The Hastings family returned to Salem by 1935.
In 1940 George filled out a draft registration form that listed his address as Vancouver, WA while his wife’s was Salem. His employer was listed as the U.S. Engineers, technical area. It is possible that his previous military experience was needed again with the U.S. facing another military conflict and that he briefly worked for the U.S. government. Further information may be available in his military records.
George’s wife Katie died suddenly 6 Oct 1946 at age 46 in Vancouver, WA of a coronary thrombosis or blood clot to the heart. She was buried in Park Hill Cemetery. It is unclear whether the couple lived together in Vancouver at this time and whether it was related to George’s brief military work during the Second World War. Both the 1940 and 1950 census list his occupation as a textile worker in a wool mill, so Salem and his work there were home base.
George died in the Veteran’s Hospital in Portland on 24 Dec 1962. He had been hospitalized 25 days prior to his death with emphysema and a cerebral artery occlusion. He was buried in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, OR. |
