Life Story

Gertrude Ade worked at TKWM in two different periods. The first in 1925 when she was 16, as a spooler. The second time from 1951-1959 as a burler in the finishing department and then in the picker house.
Gertrude Doyle was born 11 Jan 1908 in Devils Lake, North Dakota. She was the daughter of William Patrick and Agnes Gertrude [Hoynes] Doyle. The family emigrated to Washington State in the early 1900s. Gertrude was one of seven children born to the couple and she attended school up to the 8th grade in Lawrence and Goshen, WA.
In 1922, Gertrude’s mother Agnes died of heart failure. Gertrude was thirteen years old. Her father left his two youngest daughters, Gertrude and Helen, in the care of their sister Mary who lived in Salem, OR. He went to California seeking work and died there in January 1930.
At the age of 16, Gertrude found work as a spooler at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. A woman from her church congregation knew of an opening at the mill and took Gertrude to work with her. A year later, Gertrude married Harry Aerol Badeau on 3 Jun 1925 in Bellingham, WA. Her husband was 25 years old, a veteran of WWI, and worked as a cook. The couple lived in Salem where Harry worked a variety of jobs from delivery driver to millworker at Oregon Pulp and Paper. They moved frequently and rented homes. The couple had no children. Gertrude trained as a beautician and worked at Lloyd’s Beauty Salon at 423 Court St. In the early 1940s.
In November 1941, Gertrude filed for divorce from her husband Harry and listed the grounds as cruel and inhuman treatment. The divorce was finalized December 16th. She remarried 2 June 1942 to Philip Wesley Ade. Philip was 36 years old, Gertude 34. At the time of their marriage, he lived in Portland and worked in the shipyards. The couple lived in Portland for a few years, then Lincoln City, OR where they operated a gas station at 1000 Highway Blvd. They were in their 40s at this point. They had no children.
In 1951, they returned to Salem where Gertrude worked at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in the finishing department. Philip found work at Oregon Pulp and Paper as a millman. Gertrude continued to work for the mill until 1959 and then found work at Western Paper Co., a company that took paper from papermills and converted it into usable stationery and tablets. She was injured on the job in 1960 and retired after that. Her husband Philip worked for Willamette University as a maintenance man, later custodian until his retirement in 1964.
Philip died 3 Feb 1975. He was buried in Restlawn Cemetery in West Salem, OR. On 24 Aug 1981, Gertrude married widower John R. Hall of Salem. The couple were retired and lived in Keizer, OR. Gertrude died 8 Aug 1984 and was buried with her second husband Phil in Restlawn Cemetery. |
