Life Story
|
Harvey Campbell worked briefly at TKWM in the dye house from March 1902 through March 1904. His brother-in-law Lewis Pickard, head of the dye house, likely played a significant role in helping him secure the position.
Harvey Weston Campbell was born 11 Oct 1884 in Guelph, Wellington, Ontario, Canada, to Richard and Martha [Barber] Campbell, one of eight children. The family immigrated to the United States in 1889 and settled in Salem, Oregon, by 1891.
In 1900, at age 15, Harvey still lived at home with his parents and brother Richard. By 1910, at age 25, he had moved to Portland, Oregon, where he worked as a plumber and lived with his parents and several siblings.
In September 1916, Harvey and his brother George traveled to Vancouver, British Columbia, and then to Ketchikan Alaska, by 1917, where Harvey registered for the World War 1 draft. He was 34 years old and listed his occupation as a self-employed miner. Also recorded on the draft paperwork was his physical description. He was of medium height and build, with brown hair and blue eyes.
By March 1918, the brothers had returned to Vancouver Island. Harvey moved to California near other family members by September 1927. The 1930 census recorded him living in Porter Gulch, Santa Cruz County, California, with his brother George, working on a farm.
In October 1933, Harvey married Margaret Hinds of Brawley, California. He was 49 years old and his bride a widow, age 46. By 1940, they lived on Owen Street in Santa Cruz, California, where Harvey worked as a plumber and owned Santa Cruz Plumbing Supply Co. He operated this business from 1932 to 1950 according to city directories.
By 1950, Harvey and Margaret had returned to Porter Gulch, Santa Cruz County, where he likely retired. Brother George and brother-in-law Edward Erickson also lived here. Harvey died on 5 Mar 1963, in a San Jose hospital after a long illness. He was buried in Oakwood Memorial Park in Santa Cruz, California. His wife Margaret had died in 1961. |
