Life Story

Hattie Koppe worked as a finisher at TKWM in the early 1900s along with other family members.

Hattie Koppe was born 3 March 1888 in Brownsville, Oregon to Emil and Augusta Koppe. By 1900, the family lived on Prospect Hill in South Salem, Oregon. Hattie was 12 years old and attended school. Her father worked for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill and found employment for his children as they came of age, including Hattie. In 1906, her father took over the Eugene Woolen Mills and the family moved to Eugene, Oregon.

On 9 June 1909, Hattie married Lloyd Charles Mitchell of McMinnville at her parent’s home in Eugene, Oregon. Lloyd was 21 and Hattie 20. He worked as a baker in McMinnville. By 1910, the couple lived in McMinnville where they owned a small bakery.

Daughter Eleanor Rowena Mitchell was born 22 January 1914, in Portland, Oregon. Lloyd worked for the Montana Flour Mills Co. and Hattie was a housewife. By 1917, the family had moved to Los Angeles, California. Lloyd continued to work for the Montana Flour Mills Co. as a salesman and demonstrator. The family moved to Ogden, Utah in 1919, when Lloyd was hired by the Ogden Baking Co. which had taken over the enterprises of the Hess Bakery company, one of the city’s pioneer baking companies. Lloyd became the general manager.

In 1929, the Ogden Baking Company now owned by Lloyd Mitchell, was acquired by Continental Baking Co. so he accepted a job at the Seattle division of Van de Kamp’s Holland Dutch Bakers Inc. This concern operated 93 stores in Los Angeles and Seattle. It had recently acquired the Chatterton system of bakeries, which consisted of 26 retail stores, a completely equipped modern plant and delivery wagons. Mr. Mitchell was one of the owners of the Chatterton system and became associated with the larger company as general manager of the Seattle division. The family bought property in North Creek, Snohomish, Washington where they could have a small dairy herd. Lloyd worked for Van de Kamp Bakeries until retirement.

Hattie died in the Arden Nursing Home in Bothell, Washington at the age of 72. Cause of death was pulmonary edema due to spinal cord degeneration. She was cremated and ashes buried in Rosehill Mausoleum in Seattle, Washington, later renamed Evergreen-Washelli Memorial Park. Husband Lloyd C. Mitchell died four years later of myocardial failure in Bothell, Washington. He was 75 years old.
