Life Story

Hazel Coshow worked sporadically for TKWM in the finishing department in the late 1920s-1930s. She was a granddaughter of mill founder Thomas Kay. Her husband Knaffle worked for the mill as assistant manager, later secretary-treasurer during this time.

Hazel Coshow was born on October 18, 1889, in Albany, Oregon, to Oliver P. and Elizabeth (Kay) Coshow. Her father later served as Chief Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court. Hazel married Knaffle Pickens on June 14, 1911, in Roseburg, Oregon. Before their marriage, Knaffle worked as a dry goods clerk in the grocery business. The couple had two children, Lola Dale and Robert, both born in Roseburg.

By 1920, the Pickens family had relocated to Salem, where they rented a home at 305 South 14th Street. Knaffle was employed as a shipping clerk at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. During the late 1920s to 1930s, Hazel periodically worked in the finishing department at the mill as a seamstress while Knaffle advanced to the roles of assistant manager and later secretary-treasurer. In 1930, the couple owned a home at 695 North 17th Street in Salem, where their children attended high school, and Hazel’s brother, Fred Coshow, lived with them.

By 1940, Hazel and Knaffle, both in their 50s, were living alone in Salem. Knaffle continued his work at the woolen mill until their retirement in the early 1950s. They then spent two years living with their daughter in Coos Bay before moving to Portland. Knaffle passed away on October 4, 1956, at the age of 69 in Portland, Oregon.

Hazel succumbed to cancer on June 2, 1965, at the age of 75, in Milwaukie, Oregon. She was interred alongside her husband in Wilhelm’s Portland Memorial Mausoleum. At the time of her death, Hazel was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and belonged to the Chadwick Chapter of the Eastern Star.
