Life Story
|
Herman Scholz worked as a weaver at TKWM from 1934-1950.
Herman Reinhold Scholz was born 23 Mar 1883 in Blumendorf, Germany to August William Scholz. In 1897, the Scholz family immigrated to Canada and later moved to the United States in 1904. They entered the U.S. in Neche, North Dakota on 17 Nov 1904 via the Great Northern Railroad. Herman declared his intention to become a U.S. citizen in Everett, Washington, on 15 Sep 1906.
By 1908, Herman had relocated to Aberdeen, Idaho, where he lived and worked until moving to Salem, Oregon, on January 16, 1912. There, he purchased a home in the Burlington Addition and filed a petition for naturalization in 1913.
In 1920, the census recorded Herman as a 36-year-old wood cutter at the state school, living at 1410 S. Cottage St. In Salem with his 77-year-old father. His father passed away on 26 Sep 1920, at Deaconess Hospital due to a valvular heart lesion.
Herman married Elizabeth Nickel on 26 Mar 1924, at Christ Lutheran Church in Salem. He was 41, and she was 34; it was the first marriage for both. By 1930, Herman, now 47, and Elizabeth owned a home on rural postal route 9 in the Fairgrounds area of Salem, where Herman worked as a flour packer in a flour mill. Elizabeth passed away at age 42 on 14 Sep 1931 from a bleeding ulcer and was buried in City View Cemetery.
On 3 Feb 1934, Herman began work in the weaving department at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. The 1940 census listed Herman as a 57-year-old widower, who owned a home valued at $200, and worked as a weaver in the woolen mill with an income of $915 for the previous year.
Herman’s 1942 World War II draft registration described him as 5’9” tall, weighing 165 lbs., with a light complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes. By 1950, Herman, aged 67, lived alone on a farm he owned in Turner and continued work as a weaver in the woolen mill until his retirement.
Herman Reinhold Scholz passed away at the age of 83 on 30 Oct 1969, in Salem, OR. He was buried in City View Cemetery. |
