Life Story

Hollis Huntington was the husband of Marjorie Kay, the daughter of Thomas B. Kay and sister of Ercel W. Kay, owners and managers of the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. According to her oral history he worked sporadically at the mill during college and their early marriage, mainly in the summer months of the early 1920s.

Hollis Wilson Huntington was born 20 Sep 1894 in The Dalles, OR to James Monroe and Mary [Mills] Huntington. He was one of six children born to the couple. His father died in 1900, when Hollis was six years old. The family remained in The Dalles, where Hollis attended public schools until the 8th grade. In 1914, he moved to Eugene, OR to attend the University of Oregon.

On 25 May 1917, Hollis enlisted in the Marine Corp and served in World War I. His marine service card lists assignments stateside, first in California and then Virginia before his discharge 15 Dec 1918. He returned to the University of Oregon in Eugene. He was a football star at the University from 1918-1920 and played in three Rose Bowl games. The first two, 1918 and 1919, with the Mare Island Marines of the World War I service team era, and the third in 1920, with the University of Oregon. In each Huntington played fullback and won praise for the quality of his play.

While at the University of Oregon, Hollis met Marjorie Kay, whom he married 29 Nov 1920, in Salem, OR. Their wedding was a large affair with over 100 invitations issued. It took place at the home of the bride’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Thomas B. Kay, in Salem, OR. They would eventually have three children: Shirley, Wallace, and Crystal.

After graduation, Hollis took a coaching job for 6 months at his former hometown, The Dalles. Then he went to a high school in Anaconda, Montana, then Medford, Oregon. He returned to Salem in 1922 fulltime when he was hired as the Salem High Coach. He coached three sports at Salem, basketball, baseball and football. His basketball team won three championships titles in 1925, 1926 and 1933.

In 1925, Hollis and Marjorie built a home at 250 N. Winter St. It was located on the lot immediately behind her parent’s home on Court St. In 1926, Hollis became a partner in The Man’s Shop in downtown Salem with Ellis Cooley. The store offered men’s clothing and accessories like shoes, hats and hosiery. He devoted his morning hours to the shop, then coached at Salem High half a day.

He resigned from coaching in 1936 after twelve years. In the Fall of 1937, the Huntington home was relocated to 790 Winter St. as part of the Capitol Mall construction project. It would be moved again in the future, to join six other historic homes in the North Mall Heritage Park. By this point the couple had sold the home.

In 1945, Hollis and Marjorie broke ground on a home on 7.24 acres in the West Salem countryside. The two-story stone house with coral pink shutters, was a showpiece and beautifully decorated with antique furniture collected by Marjorie. It also had elaborately designed gardens. The family moved in just prior to Thanksgiving in 1947.

Hollis retired in 1962. He died seven years later in a Portland hospital at the age of 74, from lung cancer. He was buried in City View Cemetery in Salem. His wife Marjorie died in 1989.
