Life Story |
Ida May Stillwell worked as a weaver at the TKWM for at least 20 years.
She was born 13 Aug 1868 in Fort Madison, Iowa to parents William and Sophia (Bricker) Stillwell. She was one of nine children born to this couple. Her mother died eight days after the birth of her ninth child; the baby was premature and died. Ida May was 15 years old at the time.
Most of these siblings stayed in Iowa or the mid-west. Ida and her sister Laura would end up moving to Oregon after they were married.
Ida May married Francis Albert “Frank” Rollo in Fort Madison, Lee County, Iowa on 16 May 1888. The couple lived in Fort Madison, Iowa She gave birth to their first child there in Aug 1899, a son named Harrison Samuel “Harry” Rollo. They moved to Illinois briefly. Their daughter, Carmel Rollo was born in Dec 1891 in Canton, IL. By 1900 they had come west to Salem, OR and were living in the Yew Park district. Frank was a painter by trade and Ida was keeping house and raising their children. Frank’s parents came to Oregon as well and are buried at the City View Cemetery. They were Francis Rollow and Violettie (Hall) Rollow.
Trouble came to Frank and Ida’s marriage. In Oct 1902 Frank left his family in Salem, OR and went to San Francisco, CA to live. Ida filed for divorce in July 1907. It appears Frank remarried in CA in 1909. Little has been found on him after that and it appears the family had little to no contact.
Ida was working for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill as a weaver by 1905. City directories show her working there continually through at least 1924. Her close friend, Marguerite Meyer worked and lived with her for many of those years. The years 1928-1930 Ida was working as an attendant at the Feeble-Minded Institution in Salem, OR. She also lived on the grounds.
Ida’s children both ended up living in Portland, OR. Carmel married a man named William Couper Taylor. They had one son. Harry was married twice and had a daughter with his 2nd wife.
Ida May died on 15 Apr 1933 in Portland, Multnomah, OR. The address on her death certificate appears to be her son Harry’s home. Survivors were her two children and her sister Laura (Stillwell) Blair. Ida was cremated and rests at Wilhelm’s Portland Memorial Mausoleum. |
