James C Sones worked as a spinner at TKWM at the time of its opening in 1890 through about 1895.
James C Sones was born in 1864 to Hyeran and Elizabeth Sones while the family lived in Harris, Pennsylvania. Little is known about how James came to Salem, but he most likely left his parents in Pennsylvania. We first discover him in the west working as a spinner at TKWM in 1890.
In Nov 1893, at age 30, James married 17-year-old housekeeper Matilda (Tillie) Eiting. Tillie continued to work while James was at TKWM. The couple left Salem sometime around 1897 and moved to San Jose, CA where James continued to work as a woolen mill spinner.
Sadly, Tillie passed away in the spring of 1902 at age 26 of unknown causes. James stayed in the San Francisco area, eventually working as a streetcar conductor and carpenter. By 1914, he has returned to Salem and remarried, to a woman named Lucy Sones. They are divorced sometime prior to 1917. James marries for a third time, a widow named Nellie M. (Abbott) Dorman and the couple resides in Portland. After their marriage, we lose track of James and Nellie. So here ends the story of TKWM spinner, James C Sones. |
