John R. Campbell Jr. worked as a spinner, then weaver at TKWM from 1910-1915, 1920-1926, and 1940. He was a textile worker his entire life, but moved between mills in Oregon, California and Washington. His parents and brother Arno were also textile workers.
John Richard Campbell Jr. was born 21 May 1890 in the town of Hespeler in Canada. At the time of his birth, his father was a fuller at the woolen mill. His parents were John Richard and Milia [Connawarf] Campbell. The couple had four sons including John. The family immigrated to the U.S. in 1900 according to census records. They came first to Dallas, OR where Father John Sr. took a job working for the woolen mill. Their paternal grandmother Susan came with the family.
In 1905, John, brother Roy and parents moved to Salem for work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. John was 14 years old. By 1910 he worked as a spinner. He worked in Salem until at least 1915 according to city directories. Then, his World War I draft registration card filled out 5 Jun 1917 gave an update. His employer was listed as Golden State Woolen Mill in Long Beach, California. His physical description was medium height, slender build. He had dark brown hair (partly bald) and brown eyes. He was also missing one finger. His brother Arno also worked at the Golden State Woolen Mill. Both lived at the Eastman Hotel.
By 1920, John had moved back to Salem. He was 29 years old, lived with his parents and youngest brother Roy at 1160 S. 12th St. near the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill where he worked as a weaver. On 7 Dec 1926, John married widow Jessie M. Foster in Vancouver, WA. He was 35 years old. The occupation listed on the marriage record was weaver, at Long Beach, WA.
By 1930, according to census records, John had moved to Eureka, CA with wife Jessie and stepchildren Louise and Clifford. He worked as a spinner in a woolen mill. Then by 1940, John and Jessie had returned to Salem for work at TKWM. They live at 1360 ½ Ferry St. John’s World War II draft registration card was filled out in 1942 and documented another move, this time to Portland. He was 52 years old and worked for the Portland Woolen Mills. His physical description listed a height of 5 ft. 11 in. and weight of 160 lbs. His complexion was dark, hair was black and eyes were brown. He was also missing the little finger on his right hand. By the 1950 census. John was 60 years old. He and Jessie were living in Portland as lodgers in the household of Abner W. Hangen. No occupation was listed.
John died 30 Jul 1966 in San Francisco County, CA. He was buried in Westminster Memorial Park in Westminster, CA. Wife Jessie and brother Arno were buried in the same cemetery. |
