Josie Phernetton worked as a weaver very briefly from 1911-1912 at TKWM along with siblings Dora and Edward. Sister Pearl and brother Clyde also worked at TKWM in the weaving department, but their work period did not overlap with Josie’s.
Josephine Emma Phernetton was born 25 June 1895 in Hot Springs, South Dakota to Edward and Emma [George] Phernetton. She was one of five children born to the couple. The family moved to Price in Linn County, Oregon when Josie was 4 years old. Her father Edward deserted the family in 1902. The older children took work at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill to help support the family. The family lived at 1413 Bellevue St. In Salem. Eventually all five of the Phernetton siblings would work for the mill. Josie’s time in the weaving department was brief. Mill work may not have suited Josie since the 1913 city directory documents a change in occupation, seamstress for J. C. Zalkowitz.
Josie married Arthur John Sweeney 2 Sep 1914 in the family home in Salem. They were the parents of one child, Paul. Over the course of their marriage the couple lived in Portland, Scio, and Salem. Husband John worked in the real estate field in Portland for more than 10 years, Simpson Lumber Co. and later operated a confectionery store in Scio. He died 27 Jan 1968 in Salem Hospital. He was buried in City View Cemetery. At the time of Josie’s death, she was a resident at a nursing home in Albany. She was buried next to husband John in City View Cemetery in Salem, OR. |
