Life Story |
Kitty Squire worked as a weaver, later forewoman of the department, at the TKWM from 1942-1946. Mill records indicate that she was a petite woman, 5’1” tall and weighed 118 lbs. She had a medium build, dark complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.
Katherine McLin was born to Dillard and Catherine (Dotterwick) McLin on 12 Jan 1905 in Independence, OR.
One of the early pioneer families, Katherine’s grandfather, Lafayette McLin came to Oregon on the Oregon Trail in 1844 when he was just a baby. The McLin family had more than its share of tragedy. Katherine’s grandmother, Mary Jane (Callahan) McLin committed suicide in 1901 by drowning herself in a pond. Katherine’s father, Dillard Bowen McLin committed suicide in 1939 by hanging himself. And later, Katherine’s son, Rodney Kay Pankalla died from hydro cephalism on 1 Nov 1943 at the age of 14.
Katherine was musically inclined and enjoyed playing in the violin choir. She was also very involved in church activities.
Katherine was married three times. She first married Allen F. Pankalla on 30 Sep 1925 when she was 20 years old. Allen worked on his father’s hop ranch by Independence during the early years of their marriage. Their son Rodney was born on 24 Dec 1929.
By 1938 the family had moved to Salem, OR and lived at 546 S 14th St. According to city directories Allen was employed as a salesman for the Honeywood Distilleries at this time. In April of 1941 Katherine filed for divorce from Allen stating cruel and inhuman treatment. She was granted this divorce but had trouble getting Allen to pay his support. He was eventually arrested for being delinquent in that support and he joined the army.
Being the only support for her son and herself, Katherine worked as a weaver for the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill [TKWM]. It’s a mystery how Katherine gained the knowledge to become a weaver, but her mother was a skilled seamstress so maybe she had something to do with that. The 1942 city directory lists Katherine as a weaver, still living at 546 S 14th. Her mother lived with her and her son Rodney. Rodney unfortunately passed away in 1943. The 1945 city directory lists Katherine working as a forewoman for TKWM. She held this position until after her second marriage.
Katherine married Everett Verne Squire on 25 Nov 1946. This marriage took place at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Salem. The couple then moved to McMinnville, OR. Katherine worked for J.C. Penney and taught music in McMinnville for many years. In 1954 Katherine was elected State Regent of Catholic Daughters of America and held that title for four years. She was also Grand Regent and was very active in that organization for many years. Katherine’s husband Everett Squire passed away on 30 Sept 1969 and is buried at City View Cemetery.
Katherine married once again on 26 Jul 1976 in Reno, NV. This third marriage was to Lawrence Herrera. They lived in McMinnville and were active in the community. Unfortunately, Lawrence had heart issues and on 12 Feb 1985 he suffered an apparent heart attack while driving. He veered off the highway, crashed through the railing on the Calapooia River bridge, and landed nose first in the water. Lawrence was dead at the scene.
Katherine continued to live in McMinnville and was an active member of the St James Catholic Church. She was a music teacher for 50 years. She died at her home in McMinnville on 13 Feb 1996 at the age of 91. She is buried alongside her 2nd husband Everett Squire at City View Cemetery in Salem, OR. The gravesites of her parents and son are close by as well. |
