Kelly Wickizer worked for TKWM in the picker house from 1938-1942 along with his mother and grandmother. He was a general laborer then washer
Kelly Wickizer was born 11 Jan 1915 in Moore’s Valley, Oregon to Samuel and Minnie May [Kelly] Wickizer. He was one of four children born to the couple. His father Samuel was a farmer at the time of his birth. The family moved to Salem by 1920 according to census records. They rented a home at 1429 Lee St. Kelly’s grandmother Dolly lived with them and worked at the nearby Thomas Kay Woolen Mill as a shoddy sorter. His mother joined her there in 1921.
Kelly attended Salem public schools and graduated from Salem High School. He married Mary Baldinger in Vancouver, WA on 14 Nov 1934. They were the parents of two sons, Lyle and Larry. In 1938 Kelly took a job at the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill in the picker house. According to the physical description on his World War 2 draft registration card, Kelly was 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighed 162 lbs., He had a light brown complexion, with gray eyes, and black hair. And at some point, had a bullet shot through his right wrist that left a scar.
Following his work at the mill he worked for Oregon Pulp and Paper as a choke-setter. He retired in 1971. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, rock collecting and gardening. Kelly died at the age of 73, on 2 July 1988 in Salem, OR. His wife Mary followed at the age of 82, on 23 Oct 1999. They were both buried in City View Cemetery. |
