(1929-1934) 

Knaffle H. Pickens was born 30 November of 1886 in Eugene, OR to James H. and Hattie H. Pickens.  James farmed while Hattie cared for their six children.  By 1910, Hattie was widowed and had moved her family to Roseburg, OR.  Her oldest sons, Knaffle and Ivan took work as dry goods clerks.   

By 1917, Knaffle had married Hazel Cushow of Roseburg.  The couple moved to Salem by 1920 and Knaffle began his career with TKWM as a shipping clerk.  By then, the family included two children, Lola Dale and Robert. 

With little formal education, Knaffle apparently studied in off hours to acquire two years college credit.   He rose in the ranks to become the Woolen Mill’s secretary by 1930 and assistant manager by 1940.  He soon became the secretary-treasurer and remained in that position for another fifteen years. 

Knaffle left TKWM in 1955 and early the following year, he and Hazel moved to Coos Bay to be near their daughter, in their retirement. Knaffle’s health deteriorated so Hazel took him to Portland for treatment where their son, Robert C Pickens lived.  Knaffle died there on 6 Oct 1956 and was interred at Portland Memorial Mausoleum.  Hazel passed away in June of 1965 in Portland.
